Day 1: Cusco – Santa Teresa – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes
Following prior arrangements you will be collected from your hotel between 7.30 a.m. and 7.45 a.m. The tour begins at 8:00 a.m. We shall leave Cusco before passing through the Sacred Valley and on up to the Abra Málaga pass (4,316m), which is the highest point on our route. From here there are great views of the surrounding snow capped peaks. From there we shall drop down into the upper jungle area where we shall be able to see abundant vegetation. Lunch will be taken on the small town of Santa Teresa. Following lunch we shall continue our bus journey to the hidroelectric station. From there we shall walk alon the railway line for approximately 3 hours to Aguas Calientes. We shall stop here for the night at a basic hostal with private bathrooms and hot water. You are free to visit the thermal springs in the afternoon.
Day 2: Machu Picchu – Cusco
Two options are available. Those who wish can be up early (4 a.m.) in order to be able to walk up to the Inca town of Machu Picchu and arrive before sunrise. Those who prefer can take one of the first buses around 6 a.m. There will be a guided tour of the site lasting about 2 hours, following which there will be free time to explore at leisure. We shall walk back to Aguas Calientes and on to the Hidroelectric Station once the visit to Machu Picchu is complete. From there we shall return to Cusco in our private bus. RECOMMENDATION ON BEHALF OF PECOCUWI TOURS: The 2 day 1 night tour is very rushed particularly since the rise in the train prices means that most people choose to walk back to the Hidroelectric plant. We recommend staying a second night in Aguas Calientes. By doing this you have more time to explore Machu Picchu, more time to enjoy the hot springs and can take a more leisurely walk back to the Hidroelectric Plant. The cost of an extra night is just US$15/person for the hotel.
